Frequently Asked Questions

Can watching television harm the eyes ?

No, television does not cause any eye defects. However, if your child is watching T.V. from a very close distance then immediately consult an eye specialist as the child might have a refractive error.

What is Farsightedness ?

It is also called Hypermetropia. It is a defect of vision caused by an imperfection in the eye (often when the eyeball is too short or the lens cannot become round enough), causing difficulty focusing on near objects, and in extreme cases causing a sufferer to be unable to focus on objects at any distance.

What is Nearsightedness?

It is also called Myopia. It is a refractive defect of the eye in which the nearer objects are clearer but vision does not go after a certain distance.

What is Astigmatism ?

Astigmatism is a visual defect in or over ocular media that leads to irregular defocused picture on or in front or even behind the retina.

My child likes to sit very close to the television. Is this harmful?

Ideally one should sit as far as possible from the television with a comfortable visual distance. However, till date it’s not yet proved that electromagnetic rays are harmful. If your child is watching T.V. from a very close distance then immediately consult an eye specialist to check up any refractive error.

When should I operate for Cataract?

Ideally with modern methods, Cataract can be removed at any stage, but it should be operated as soon as it starts interfering in your daily routine.

Should I wait till Cataract advances or matures?

With the advanced technique of Phacoemulsification, Cataract can be broken inside the eye. As Cataract advances, it hardens, making it difficult to remove by Phaco itself. Over-matured Cataract can burst in the eye and result in complete loss of vision. Thus Phaco-surgery needs to be done while the cataract is still soft.

Which is the good technique for surgery?

Phacoemulsification is a good technique with advantages of micro-incision, no stitches, safer and faster recovery.

Which is a good lens?

Foldable lenses are good as they can be inserted through micro-incision requiring only a small puncture. With advanced optical foldable lenses, the quality of vision especially during night and low light conditions becomes much better.

What special treatment does my eye require while healing?

Use drops as directed by the doctor.

Wear protective sunglasses whenever you are outside on sunny days especially if the glare causes discomfort.

Avoid direct pressure on the eye.

Don’t rub or scratch the eye.
